"What really resonated with me was Angus’s ability to challenge me to look deep and hard at myself and really challenge me on what I’m trying to achieve. I knew Angus was the person I needed to challenge me to be outside my comfort zone."

Helen Peters, Group Financial Controller, Meridian Energy

"Finding my why with Angus will stick with me forever. It's made me a better leader and it's given me a lot more satisfaction with work. I had no satisfaction, by the time I met with Angus, all joy had been sucked out of my role. It’s back now."

Johl Steel-Brown, Head of Operations Support, Airways NZ

How to choose the right leadership coach

Choose the right coach for you

Take your time and notice the rapport.  Find someone you feel a strong connection with, who you trust to have your back, and ask tough questions.

Be clear what you want from coaching

Be super clear on what you want to accomplish and how the relationship might work. What does success look like? How much are you prepared to invest in yourself?

Consider your coaching experience

Think of relationships that brought the best out of you. How did they feel and how did they change over time? What sort of coaching experience will help you grow?

"It's been exactly what I wanted it to be. It has been hard, not in a bad way, but hard because I have been challenged on the way I think and act, and that is exactly what I wanted."

Helen Peters, Group Financial Controller, Meridian Energy

Your coaching process

1: Contracting conversation

I schedule a 25-minute conversation, with you, me, and your coaching sponsor, who is usually your manager. We discuss any relevant context, the outcomes your sponsor wants from the coaching, and our roles, including how your sponsor can best support you. I explain the coaching process and answer any questions. This call is the last time I speak with your sponsor. My relationship is then solely with you, and our conversations are entirely confidential. I encourage you to check in with your sponsor regularly, update them on what you’re working on and seek the support they’ve committed to.

2: Coaching agreement

We agree the outcomes you want from coaching. These are recorded in a coaching agreement for us both to refer back to, along with a summary of the outcomes agreed with your sponsor on the contracting call.

3: Coaching sessions

We schedule your sessions in our calendars. My initial coaching package is six sessions of one hour, where we do 50 minutes of work. I recommend two to three weeks between coaching sessions. If you live in Auckland, we can meet in person. I hold coaching sessions offsite to remove you from distractions, so let me know if you’d like to meet, and I’ll book a meeting room. Video coaching sessions work well too. You take ownership for your own coaching. It’s up to you to set the cadence for your coaching sessions, schedule the meetings, send a video call invite, record our conversation if you want to, and take notes. I’ll give you reflection to do after each session, and sometimes other tasks too. I expect you to do your homework. I start the session by checking in on what’s happened since we last met, and how you’ve gone with your actions. I know the limits to my expertise, so if we uncover issues outside my ability to help you, or I believe your wellbeing is at risk, I will seek further support.

4: Between sessions

The corporate world can be lonely and operational issues can quickly suck the oxygen out of your ambition to focus on development. You've got me on tap as a trusted confidant and sounding board throughout the entirety of your coaching experience. Pick up the phone, flick me an email to ask a question, test a solution to a situation, or process a tough day. I’m here for you.

One-to-one coaching fees

$3,250 for 6 sessions + any meeting room costs + GST

If you want to work together longer, that’s possible. We can cover a lot in six sessions, so let’s start there and we’ll see how we go.

"Working with Angus was uncomfortable at times. He helped me come out of my shell, explore some things in a way that I wouldn’t normally do. I really enjoyed his openness and vulnerability, that makes him really approachable. It feels more like talking to a friend than it does talking to a coach."

Johl Steel-Brown, Head of Operations Support, Airways NZ

High-impact, personalised coaching

This is all about helping you be a better human, so we go deep enough to unlock the things you’re doing to hold yourself back. I will challenge you and call you on your bullshit. And I will hold you safe in that discomfort until you have those breakthroughs that enable you to realise your potential.

Our coaching relationship will evolve to give you the support you need. You’re in the driver's seat. Sometimes you may want me to act as a mentor, teacher or sounding board, and I’m happy to wear those hats. I’ve worked in seven industries – energy, retail, travel, telecom, finance, IT, and dairy – and gained 25 years of corporate expertise developing leaders and teams.

"Angus is intense in a beautiful way. If you want to work on yourself, then meet with him. You make your own decision about if there's a fit there. But he'll go those places where you need to go."

Suzie Lewisham, People & Culture Director, Fonterra
